What is internal link building?

What is internal link building?

Today we are talking about what is internal link building, why is it so important and how it will benefit your blog or a website. You’ve probably heard about “link building” before if you are someone interested in blogging and SEO.

In case you didn’t, link building is an SEO practice which is used to position your website better and to make your content more reachable.

Essentially, it is a process of getting links from other websites to your own. If you are trustworthy and authority website – you will have a lot more people linking to your content. This is what you will be aiming at – as a website owner.

There are thee types of links: internal, external and backlinks.

Although external links and backlinks are also really important part of SEO, our focus today is gonna be on internal links.

If you are new to Internet marketing and SEO and are interested in learning more then check MY TOP RECOMMENDATION in the main menu of the website.

Well, because it is proven that link building helps with your rankings on search engines.

Authority websites in SEO sphere like: Moz, SeoRush, BackLinko, SeoCopyWriting, ContentMarketingInstitute, Google Webmaster are examples of websites with great amounts of backlinks.

As explained on image above, backlink is link that is acquired from other websites.

So, all of these websites mentioned before will receieve a backlink from me – which will automatically give them more online recognition and respect.            The more backlinks you have the more trusted you are by Google and you will position better.

I personally recommend having at least 5 internal and 5 external links per each post you make. This will definitely ensure more attention from Google.

As we mentioned before, internal and external links are also important parts of SEO and should be implemented in every post. Internal links represent links that go/lead from one page to a different page on the same domain or a website.

For example, by clicking on this monetizing tip you will be driven to my post about monetizing your website and website content.

Visible part of the link is called anchor text. In our example it is the word “monetizing tip”. Anchor text is used to describe the page/post the link is leading at. You should try to pick relevant words for anchor text because this practice will build more trust between you and the readers.

What is internal link building?

External links are links that go from one page on one domain to a different page on a different domain. External links are more important for SEO than internal links. This is why you should aim and provide only good, trustworthy external links for your readers.

Avoid linking your content to suspicious and malicious websites. Manipulating that way with your links is not allowed and can put on you on the Google blacklist.

An example of external link would be Moz. By clicking on the word “Moz” you will be redirected to Moz blog. That is the secret behind building external links. Not too difficult right?

As we already discussed to position better on search engines you should pick authority websites for your external links. Google algorithm loves this and so should you.

Now that you know what is internal link building it is time to understand how to build internal links. This part is really easy.

If you are using WordPress, you will just need to select the desired word and click on the insert/edit link icon in the main menu that is above your post. In the empty field you should add the link of the page you would like to redirect people to.

What is internal link building?

And that is how internal link building is being done. They are not so important for SEO, however they are really important for indexing your website content. And this is what we will be talking about more in the next part of the post.

The biggest plus of internal links is that they will help the search engines discover the architecture of your website and also link equity. These internal links will help the Google crawlers reach all the parts of your website and that is why you should have good link structure.

This part is really important and should not be skipped. If you have a bad link structure, Google crawlers will not be able to reach your every post and all of your  good work could go unnoticed.

The best internal link structure should resemble a pyramid shape, like on the image above.

It is recommended to cover all of your pages and posts with at least one internal link. This will allow crawlers to go from page to another without cutting the link chain. If you truly did this part great, your content will be indexed in no time and you will ease up the crawling process.

What is internal link building?

However, I would like to point out that creating online income is not easy when you are on your own. I was complete computer newbie before creating this website. I didn’t know anything about website building and website development, how and what to write and how the money is made online.

Before becoming a member of Wealthy Affiliate I tried gathering resources, reading and watching tutorials from authority websites and tried putting all of that together in my first affiliate marketing attempt. Unfortunately, I did not have any results. It was too much new information, constant felling that my stuff was just not good enough and I got overwhelmed.

There was no one to point out in the right direction or give me immediate answer about my doubts and provide me with the help I needed. I believe this is the main reason most people tend to quit before they see the results.

Great thing is that I was lucky enough to find Wealthy Affiliate – the best online affiliate marketing platform/SEO training center/online community. Here, more than 1.3 million members are at your disposal via live chat.

What is internal link building?

I can not tell you how much this means to me. Each time I would get stuck, I would just go on chat and ask for help. My questions were answered in no more than 3 minutes and I would just carry on with the work.

Website you are looking at right now came to be thanks to the training I received at Wealthy Affiliate. If you are like me, eager to learn and put in the work in creating your online income than I suggest giving Wealthy Affiliate a try.

  1. Hello Strahinja,

Thank you for explaining this all for me! I never heard of a backlink until now. I’m going to use these tips for my blog in the near future. I’ll also check out Neil Patel’s article. He always has good information about blogs & I’ve seen others suggest him if I need help. I’m glad you are part of the Wealthy Affiliate family!

    Best Wishes, Rachel

    1. Hello and thank you for your comment Rachel.

Hopefully I helped you with understanding backlinks. You should definitely check Neil. He is truly great in this field.

  2. You present great information about building links, particularly internal links. It is important to understand that every time new content is added to a website, you should go back to older content and add links to the new content. This helps keep the older content fresh. This should help your readers find content. And it will also help you with your SEO and page ranking. Also, internal linking helps you avoid creating orphan pages, pages without links.

    1. Thank you for your comment Glen.

Yes, in this article i tried to provide and showcase why are links important and how to create internal links.

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

  3. Nice post mate. Good to just get a refresh on the seo stuff and here it put in different words. It can be so overwhelming sometimes. I like how you have put it really nice and easy how to create a link. I probably put around 30 into my posts. That is internal and external links, I have yet to get backlinked from another authority site. Any tips on that? Thanks Hendrik

    1. Thank you for reading Hendrik.

I will not lie to you. Getting backlinks is not easy. For someone to link to your website you must have a good and trustworthy website. Not only that, but you must create high quality and engaging content. That takes time, but improve everyday and you will eventually get there.

      Best regards,

  7. This is a great post, thanks for explaining the importance of internal links.  When building my pages and posts I will certainly remember to add internal links.  It is now clear to me how important it is.  I really did not realize how important it was to your SEO, but now it all makes sense.  I’m going to bookmark your page and refer back to it for other information I’m sure I need.

  8. Hi,

Until recently I didn’t use links at all. Then my mentor advised me to use them and your article helped me understand how important they are.

I thought I would start adding internal links when I have more post but really it is a lot easier to do it from the begging.  Hoe does that pyramid work exactly? You link to a couple of post that link to other posts?

    1. Hello and thank you for your comment. Yes, each post in this pyramid structure should be linking to one of the main pages and every post should contain internal links that follow this pattern.

      Best regards,

  9. Thanks to reminding me about internal link building.

You are right that internal link building is a rather easy process and mostly needed for Google indexing. I usually create two or three internal links to related posts of my site and about the same number of external links mainly to related product homepages. Sometimes to Wiki or .gov sites.

I do not bother with backlink building as they are no longer so important. Although when you can naturally get high page rank backlink, then I guess it could bring some SEO value.

    1. You are welcome Andrej. Sometimes we forget about simple things like internal building that can really help our website and our positioning.

      Thank you for reading.

  11. Internal link building is an important part of SEO. Unfortunatelly sometimes new bloggers and marketers forget it. But internal link building is not just important because it will help your rankings but also because it makes it easier for your visitors to navigate your site.

It is also important for building a funnel. You want your visitors to stay on your site, read more and increase your conversions.
